Makita Battery Platform Guide: LXT vs XGT vs CXT

Makita’s Three Battery Platforms: Which Is Right for You?

Makita operates three distinct cordless battery platforms — 18V LXT, 40V max XGT, and 12V max CXT. Unlike some competitors who have consolidated onto a single platform, Makita’s three-tier approach serves genuinely different use cases. Here’s how to choose the right platform — or the right combination.

18V LXT: The Professional Standard

The 18V LXT (Lithium-Ion eXtreme Technology) platform is Makita’s flagship and the world’s largest 18V cordless tool system, covering over 280 tools. Introduced in 2005, LXT is a mature, proven ecosystem with an unmatched breadth of tools: drills, impact drivers, saws, grinders, nailers, vacuums, dust extractors, outdoor power equipment, and highly specialized trade tools across electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and construction categories.

Who should choose LXT: Most professionals. If you’re building a comprehensive tool ecosystem from scratch or expanding from a starter kit, LXT is the platform with the most depth. Whether you’re a general contractor needing 20 different tools or a woodworker needing a complete shop setup, LXT covers it all on a single battery format.

LXT Battery Options: 2Ah (compact), 3Ah (standard), 4Ah, 5Ah, 6Ah. Higher-capacity batteries provide more runtime but add weight. For most professional applications, 5Ah is the sweet spot between runtime and weight.

40V max XGT: High Power Applications

The XGT (eXtreme Grinding Technology) platform delivers higher performance than 18V LXT in demanding categories: large angle grinders, 7.25-inch circular saws, large rotary hammers, and heavy-duty concrete tools. XGT tools use a dedicated 40V battery format that is NOT compatible with LXT batteries — it’s a separate ecosystem investment.

Who should choose XGT: Professionals who need maximum power in specific tool categories but want to stay cordless. An electrician who needs an LXT ecosystem for general work but needs a more powerful grinder for conduit work might invest in the XGT grinder alongside their LXT platform. XGT makes most sense when you have a specific high-power application that LXT doesn’t adequately address.

XGT Battery Options: 2.5Ah, 4Ah. Fewer options than LXT but sufficient for the high-power tools in the lineup.

12V max CXT: Ultra-Compact Precision

The CXT (Compact eXtreme Technology) platform prioritizes size and weight above all else. CXT tools are dramatically smaller and lighter than LXT equivalents — the CXT drill fits in a palm, and the CXT impact driver is barely larger than the bit it’s driving. Performance is lower than LXT, but for applications where tool size is the constraint rather than power, CXT excels.

Who should choose CXT: Electricians working in tight panel spaces, finish carpenters driving small hardware screws, and anyone for whom a full-size LXT tool is genuinely too large for the task. CXT also serves as an excellent secondary platform for LXT users who want compact tools for detail work without switching ecosystems entirely.

Can You Run Multiple Platforms?

Yes — and many professionals do. A common setup: LXT as the primary platform for 90% of tools, with XGT for one or two high-power applications (grinder, circular saw) and CXT for compact detail tools. The batteries don’t cross-compatible, so you’re managing multiple chargers — but the tool performance benefits often justify the complexity.

Makita Multi-Volt (18V+18V)

Makita also makes a set of 36V tools (labeled 18V+18V or Multi-Volt) that accept two LXT batteries in series for doubled voltage. This gives you high-power tools without a new battery platform — the same LXT batteries you already own. Popular Multi-Volt tools include the XRM09Z fan, chainsaw, and some table saw models.
